Convenience and Future of ATMs in my Community Essay Example for Free

Comfort and Future of ATMs in my Community Essay Programmed Teller Machines (ATM) have made our life simple and helpful from various perspectives. With an ever increasing number of ATMs being introduced from traffic intersections to neighborhood retails, from outside the bank to shopping centers, they are difficult to miss. Gone would they say they are days when we have to remain in line inside banks holding on to be served by tellers? Exchange currently handled with simply the snap of a couple of catches. History and Development Luther George Simjian, in 1939, had the first plan to put an ATM in quite a while (Bellis, n. d. ). He was to put them in openings with the goal that bank customers can make their exchange through the window. This was first tried in Quite a while First National City Bank now Citicorp yet was later dismissed because of the absence of interest of clients (Bellis, n. d. ). The first really money apportioning machine was made by John Shepherd-Barron from De La Rue Instruments called De La Rue Automatic Cash System, or DACS (International Merchant Services, n. d. ). They were checks purchased ahead of time from tellers and was impregnated with Carbon 14 all together for the machines to identify them (Bellis, n. d. ). It was introduced and put in Barclays bank in London (International Merchant Services, n. d. ). In 1969, the main attractive card was presented. It was made by Don Wetzel who was working with Docutel. He had the patent alongside Tom Barnes and George Chastain. It was introduced in a New York based Chemical Bank (Bellis, n. d. ). Afterward, Docutel built up the first genuinely ATM machine that we are natural today. It was put in the divider and outside the bank. Nonetheless, the main ATMs didn't legitimately got to your own record while pulling back cash from it. Rather, they were at first offered to the banks Mastercard holders with great credit standings (Bellis, n. d. ). They were just money headways from the customers Mastercard as opposed to charging them legitimately from the record. It was a long way from what we are aware of today where ATMs can do nearly everything a standard teller can do, for example, stores, moves cash from checking to reserve funds, loans to your charge card and takes installments. How ATMs Work ATM functions by furnishing clients and customers with a remote access with their financial balances. These machines are associated with the financial balances through web association with the banks database where it has data on the measure of cash in the record (Bowen, 2000). The attractive piece of the card stores data of the client, for example, account number and the pass code. When the client has entered the right code it will check it to the clients bank and will convey confirmation on the exchange that must be made. The card at that point administers the cash utilizing an electronic eye and finder to decide the bills that are conveyed. The sensor identifies if there are stuck or destroyed bills and places them in the dispose of plate and issues the client the necessary exchanges (Bowen, 2000). When the exchanges are made, they are signed in the machines diary on the off chance that the customer has debates on the exchanges. Development of the ATM The notoriety of the ATM is undisputed today. The quantity of ATMs introduced today shows its prosperity and adequacy on both the banks and their customers. Banks have grasped this innovation due to three reasons (Islam, Sheel, Biswas, n. d. ). To start with, banks improve their monetary, promoting and serious situations by drawing in customers and expanding their income by expanding their administrations, for example, credits and money related bundles (Islam, et. al. , n. d. ). ATMs furnished HR with more opportunity to process demand that ATMs can't process, consequently, it expanded the proficiency of tellers offering better types of assistance to their customers expanding the salary of banks. Further, clients are presently searching for manages an account with more access to ATMs for their benefit and openness. Second, ATMs can perform a significant number of the undertakings than tellers do and over the long haul they are simpler to keep up and cost impressively not exactly their human partners (Islam, et. al. , n. d. ). Introducing ATMs lessens the outstanding task at hand of tellers. The expansion in number of customers for a bank implies that they would require more assets to oblige their clients. ATM machines are increasingly productive for they need no preparation and less support (Islam, et. al. , n. d. ). Banks understand this savvy method of offering support and gave an ever increasing number of machines to their customers (Ferrari, Verboven, Degryse, 2007). Last, ATM machines fill in as variables for showcasing choices for money related foundations (Islam, et. al. , n. d. ). Banks would first place ATMs in quite a while for building up bank offices. They would initially check whether there are sufficient customers for them in the territory before at last building up a bank in the region. ATMs today can likewise give loans from Mastercards relying upon the admissible furthest reaches of the card. Another accommodation accommodated the clients is the additional element of ATM cards. They would now be able to be utilized as a platinum card like that of the Visa. In any case, clients must ensure that they have enough money in their records to make comparable buys with that of the charge card. Issues Facing ATMs, however valuable for the majority of its clients, is imperfect and issues. They are a large portion of the occasions dependable yet at times they do separate and need some upkeep. It is some of the time unavailable and needs update and it needs to renew its money substance. These are the basic issues of ATM machines. First time clients of the machine may likewise think that its hard to utilize them and might be mind boggling for them. Be that as it may, this can be adapted effectively with a couple of attempts at the machine. Others, then again, brings up those ATMs administer just a specific group of cash. Clients are either to execute lower or higher than what they truly need however sometimes precisely the money they needed. At last, customers are now and again baffled when the machine catches their cards particularly in the event that they severely need the money and they don't have some other ATMs accessible to them. Individual Application In Scottsbluff, Nebraska, ATM machines are regularly arranged in neighborhood shops inside the network. There is additionally one situated inside my nearby bank that has my record. Areas where there are numerous individuals passing by likewise have ATM machines introduced inside the territory. This gives comfort and openness to clients who need money. Further, individuals who have no private vehicles can undoubtedly get to these machines and do their exchanges without the heading off to the bank. Further, they are simpler to introduce than building new bank offices. By and by, ATMs have its own preferences and inconveniences. The most gainful would be comfort and openness. Individuals don't have to do their exchange inside the bank or during banking hours. They can even do it during the night or even in another state. ATMs in the shopping center have a business esteem for the shopping center other than having individuals to simply pull back money from the machine. On the off chance that clients pull back cash in the shopping center, they are probably going to invest some of it in a similar shopping center. Residents of Scottsbluff are likewise destined to go through a part of their cash in the Newsagents, chip shop, stylists and the two open houses. These spots have ATM machines situated close to them. In any case, there are a few detriments. A few ATMs have overcharges on the off chance that you are utilizing a machine from an alternate bank other than yours. Individuals utilizing these machines 2-3 times each week, can have overcharges that may have a sizable sum. Be that as it may, this is still extremely insignificant contrasted with the advantages that these machines give us. Another impediment of ATMs in certain territories of the network is those that are situated inside shops that nearby early. These machines would have restricted access to expected clients and are just accessible just during store hours. At long last, updates on tricks associated with ATM machines are turning out to be progressively basic where in hoodlums can approach your own record by utilizing a machine connected to ATMs that records your own data just as your record number and pin code. End The weakness of ATMs exceeds the preferences that it provides for its clients just as the banks that give them. ATMs have made considerable progress from its beginnings. Today, it is not, at this point simply utilized for basic money scattering yet additionally incorporates a wide assortment of employments including installment of bill, ATM charging and loans from Visas. Without these machines, banks would have not been as productive as they are today and individuals would have not torn the advantages of this innovation. References Bellis, M. (n.d.). Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development Case Study

Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development Case Study Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development â€" Case Study Example > ? To be a good leader, one needs to have a strong exemplary and admirable personality. This includes possessing qualities like self-confidence and a positive attitude. Though I performed rather well on the test on personal characteristics, I feel I need to understand myself and work on my self-confidence and also seek to develop a positive outlook in my daily endeavors. These are two areas that I performed poorly. Self-confidence entails the knowledge that I will be successful in anything that I undertake. Being Self-confident would make me more powerful, popular, and would make me more persuasive with the people I encounter. Moreover, exhibiting self-confidence will make me more cheerful and affable, and people will always be receptive of me wherever I go, since most people want to be around and be associated with people with strong self-confidence. Being confident will also be of great help in the organization I will work for. As an employee, I am an ambassador of the organization. As I interact with people, I should be able to represent my organization positively. Moreover, having a positive outlook will personally help me to be realistic in life and always to look and hope for the best. An organization I may work for would also benefit in that I will always think in terms of solutions and how any situation, no matter how bleak it may appear, could be made to work to the advantage of the organization. As such, I feel the proposed training will come in handy to me as an individual and the organizations I may work for. According to the report, I have not quite mastered decision-making process skills, and need to be more proactive. Decision-making is a vital tool for a leader, since he/she will be confronted by many situations that need clear decisions that would affect the future of the organization. This also applies to me as an individual. In a bid to improve my decision-making skills, I sought feedback from my boss and my peers. My boss reported that I am not badly off and that I had a good approach towards decision-making. However, He said that I needed to learn how to anticipate problems and seek to avert them, or be ready with solutions. My peers reported that I concentrated more on the decision than the process. Most of them said that I needed to have several solutions at hand in case one bounces. My development opportunity in this training will be time management and communication skills. However, I will concentrate on time management since I scored the lowest marks. As a leader, I will need to be able to organize my team and their work as well as timely fulfilling my job and personal responsibilities. I will take courses that will help me improve on time management. I will enroll at Australian Institute of Management (http: //www. aimqld. com. au/training/coursedirectory/alphalist. asp). I will take two courses: leadership essential ($1800, 3days); and Leadership challenges for a woman ($300, 1day) (Member price). To improve my skill s further, I will also join Public Relations Institute of Australian for $360(professional). I will also participate in National conference research colloquium and World Public Relations Forum. To build a competitive edge, I will establish a culture of healthy debates amongst my team members. This is a constructive and meaningful way to provoke my team to brainstorm on innovative ideas that would improve the organization. Secondly, having delivered a strong business and financial case, I will not hesitate to offer an employee chance to pursue an idea he/she is passionate about. Lastly, I will always give credit to jobs well done and implement policies that will ensure constant motivation of my team members. To ensure that I retain my capacity to practice safely, efficiently and within the provision of law, I will seek further learning and training in: problem-solving; to be able to approach problems in a systematic way; emotional intelligence; to be better at recognizing my own e motions and those of other people. Hey, your leaving early, yeah its getting late I said . Let me walk with you he said. So as we were walking we stopped and sat on the playground and started talking when he leaned in and started kissing me then he tried to go up my dress and he took a picture. I told him stop and to delete it and he told me he did. So its been a couple days since we been hanging out now. But one crazy day happened I went to school and everybody is just looking at me and all the football players on his team is just looking at me laughing and high fiving nick so I asked him whats going on and one of the jocks name Tony showed me the picture and said dang, you get around fast huh. I was so hurt because I thought he really liked me most of all I thought he was my friend. Eventually I thought that this would have blew over and everybody would have forgotten about it. But like 2 weeks pass and this still the topic in school I dont why because we didnt even do anything. These kids were being so rude and mean calling me out my name putting in my locker and all ty pes of things. I was depressed and lonely and was really getting tired of this I couldnt tell the student counselor because I didnt want to sound like a snitch I couldnt tell my parents because they were either at work or fussing. Like a month pass since this happened and Jessica was having a birthday party so one of my friends suggested that we go. So I went thinking everybody forgotten about it, but the havent. So that night i went home filled the bath tub up and cut my wrist until I blead to death.

Case Study about Accounting and Financial Plan of Magical Healthy Goodies

Description of Business â€Å"Magical Healthy Goodies† is a home-based business, selling low-calorie healthy cookies, cakes, and pastries. Business objectives, which are specific clearly defined targets, are the following: starting from December 2010, to increase sales twice by the end of February 2011, and achieve sales of $15 000 in the following 6 months.   In order to do this, sole proprietor of the business Ms. Fatmah Hemdan will hire one personal assistant Ms. Alyaa Mohamed, who will be helping with orders, deliveries, and overall management. The business will use social media marketing, namely Facebook group, to promote their products. Social media activities will include updating the group, inviting new friends, and sending email invitations to join the group and purchase the products. Identification of Financial Stakeholders and Required Financial Information Financial stakeholders of â€Å"Magical Healthy Goodies† include: Internal stakeholders: Ms. Fatmad Hemdan, a sole proprietor owning the business, who also plays a role of a manager and protector of business possessions. She conducts planning, control, and decision-making in the firm. She and her assistant, Ms. Alyaa will be responsible for external stakeholder accounting, which include preparation of balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow statements. External stakeholders: the funding body, competitors, customers and suppliers. The firm will get a bank loan in order to raise start-up capital and realize their plan. To receive a business loan, they will need to prepare a business plan showing a lender why the loan is necessary and how the money will be used. Besides, the lender must know whether the firm will be able to repay. For this reason, cash flow projections have to be written to show financial data and possible risk. In addition, a statement of personal financial status, past business tax returns, and credit rating report of the owner is needed. As soon as the loan is received, the firm will start their business and do external stakeholder accounting through balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow statements (Ward n.d.). Direct competitors of the firm are entrepreneurs and companies, producing low calorie cookies, cakes, and pastries. In order to stay competitive and acquire new customers, they will conduct research on management and marketing practices, pricing policies, special receipts used by â€Å"Magical Healthy Goodies†. Customers of â€Å"Magical Healthy Goodies† are mostly female Facebook users and their friends, who take care of their health, make sport, want to lose weight, and would prefer purchasing fresh home-made healthy food for themselves and their families instead of regular products from shops and supermarkets. Customers will need to know information related to pricing, quality of products, raw materials used, as well as social and environmental impact of the products. Suppliers include wholesalers or retailers of materials, the firm needs to produce and pack bakeries. Necessary materials that Ms. Fatmah and Ms. Alyaa will buy on a regularly basis are flour, brown sugar, fructose, honey, salt, milk, eggs, margarine, vegetable oil, etc. In addition, the firm will need paper package suppliers in order to pack and deliver goods safely. Their information needs include knowledge of financial health and chain practices of the firm, their business operations, ethics, accountability and disclosure. Good financial information requires thorough business planning and preparation of all the accounting and financial documents described below, timely reporting to external stakeholders, and doing everything possible to achieve business objectives. Identification of Business Assets and Liabilities Ms. Fatmah’s long-term liabilities include repayment of the start-up bank loan, which is due to be paid in 1.5 year (Ward n.d.). Short-term liabilities are accounts payable – cash owed to suppliers, and paid at the end of every month; salary payable and taxes payable.   Ã‚  Long-term assets are represented by Ms. Fatmah’s home office, equipment such as oven and microwave she uses to bake the products, while short-term assets are raw materials and other supplied used to bake cookies and cakes; cash, and possibly accounts receivable money her customers own for products purchased on credit. Owner’s equity, which is reported on the firm’s balance sheet, is difference between total assets (long-term and short-term assets) and total liabilities (short-term and long-term liabilities). At the beginning owner’s equity will be in minus, since the bank loan due in more than a year will be a long-term liability, and need to significantly increase sales in order to repay the loan with interest (Clausen 2010). Identification of Business Budget Ms. Fatmah intends to get $10 000 to start her home business. Thus budget forecasting revenue, expenses and profit, will ensure that expenses will not exceed their limits. In the view of the fact, that the firm does not have many variable costs and can predict and control any possible expenses in the future, the fixed budget would be suitable. Ms. Fatmah’s expenditures can change only due to price growth for raw and packaging materials, or electricity. Thus, a realistic financial plan can be prepared, and there will not be a need to change it in the future. Conclusion â€Å"Magical Healthy Goodies†, owned by Ms. Fatmah is a small business that does not require a large investment. The entire production process will be done at home; there is no need for additional employees except for one personal assistant; Facebook advertising chosen by Ms. Fatmah is absolutely free, and requires only time and effort. However, in any case in order to get a loan, necessary financial and accounting information must be prepared and reported regularly to stakeholders. The firm must have a clear business plan, identify assets, liabilities and business budget to achieve success and obtain profit. The Catcher Of The Rye By William Shakespeare And Mark Twain

Since at least 387 B.C. censors have been trying to ban books that contain nontraditional or unpopular viewpoints. Books are banned because of the whole book in general or sometimes even for a single word or because the cover seems to suggest an offensive subject matter. Censors not only try to ban â€Å"dirty books† but they try to ban classics as well. Many classic writers such as William Shakespeare and Mark Twain have had their work attacked by censors as well as contemporary writers such as Annie Dillard and Alice Walker. Even books like dictionaries, travel guides, and Bibles have been banned (â€Å"If You Think We We’re Free†). Many people feel that J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher In The Rye is dangerous because it contains vulgarity, violence, and sexual content (Chandler). Although The Catcher in the Rye was put on the banned book list shortly after its first publication in 1951, it is a fascinating and enlightening classic that everyone s hould have the opportunity to read. Holden Caulfield, the main character and narrator of The Catcher in the Rye, is a teenager growing up in the 1950’s in New York. He has been expelled from school once again for poor achievement. Action Research on Learning of Kindergarten Students free essay sample

Classical studies regarding teaching methods and classroom curricula are conducted by outside observers of particular classroom interactions. Through such studies, generalizable methods are formulated and considered appropriate for application in different classrooms across the board. Such process, though not necessarily ineffective, leaves out an important aspect of the classroom setting, the individual characteristics of teachers and students. Here, action research comes in. A method involving scrutinizing one’s own practice and children’s behavior, family background, and social influences, action research allows for the consideration of peculiar details inherent in every classroom (Borgia, E. Schuler, D., 1996). Upon gathering results of particular changes implemented in personal classroom environments, concurrence from other teaching professionals may be sought (Borgia, E. Schuler, D.). Thus, a bottom-up process of gathering information and formulating teaching methodologies is applied. Such a process would answer for quirks in the system wherein classical research methods produced data not generalizable to learning classes. As researcher, the teacher takes an active stance in finding out how current education concepts and theories actually translate in real classrooms (Ritchie, G.). The process starts with an inquiry and a plan of accounting for and measuring the relation of certain innovative practices on already known concepts. Subjective and personal accounts are then kept by the teacher-researcher and conclusions later drawn (Borgia, E. Schuler, D.). The generalizability of conclusions and theories arrived at are found out through collaborations with colleagues, presentations in seminars or articles in publications (Mohr, M.). Such change in established and most times mandated curricula may meet resistance, or worse, admonishment. However, teachers maintain the right to act in new and creative ways (Florio-Ruane, S., 2002). Kersten and Pardo introduce two methods by which teachers may implement the change they desire in the curriculum without upsetting existing political situations: finessing and hybridizing (2007). Finessing requires maneuvering around established policies, although not necessarily contradicting the same while hybridizing requires manipulation of the manner in which teaching curricula or policies are implemented so as to answer the needs of actual students (Kersten, J. Pardo, L.). Thus, in both cases a uniquely different teaching method may be observed although the original plan of the policy-makers is still in place. Such methods should not be seen as aberrations from the norm, rather they are active creations implemented to address the learning situations of actual classrooms. The teacher then becomes as much a curriculum and policy-maker as those outside objective observers. Such active stance employed by the teachers address the variety of needs that arise from diverse classrooms (Kersten, J. Pardo, L.). Action Research and Free Reading Time This paper seeks to address the question on whether or not kindergarten students learn during free reading time employing action research as a means of research. Using action research as a methodology, significant changes have been implemented by reading teachers across grades. Included in these studies have been voluntary reading studies. Classes often devote a portion of their time to free reading wherein students may read whatever book they want. This is done to supposedly increase the reading, writing and comprehension skills of the students as well as broaden their vocabulary range (Krashen, S., 2006). This free reading time has been hailed as an ingenious way of engaging students to love reading. It has also been lauded for its supposed benefits on the learning progress of students as those who practiced free reading time outshone their counterparts who only practiced traditional methods of learning literacy skills (Krashen, S.). Krashen posits that in order for free reading time to be truly effective, there should be no reports or other such requirements asked of the students after the activity and they should be given complete choice in the material to be read, as a wide variety of potentially interesting material is made available to them. However, observations made by teachers applying this free reading time model have shown that students still emerge reluctant to read (Maguiness, C. Parr, J.M., 2005). There were students who read during class time but did not pursue their reading interest outside of the classroom and there were others who were reluctant to simply participate in the activity itself. As a result several teachers at the said school decided to simultaneously improvise on the model by engaging the students in conversation regarding what they had read at the end of each activity. The students were still allowed to choose any reading material that they preferred and were in fact encouraged to bring to school any materials they had started reading outside of class or the library. The teachers conversed openly with the students and allowed them to freely and fully express themselves, perhaps allowing expressions that a teacher would normally reprimand in class. The conversations dwelled on the choice of books, their impressions on the same, their impressions on material they had not chosen, and the like. The teachers actively encouraged the students to read through these conversations and through modeling as they themselves expressed their impressions on books they had read. As the year progressed students began talking with one another about the material they were reading outside of the groups organized by their teacher. As a result, there was marked improvement in the class’s attitude towards reading and the students began reading a wider variety of books as they explored choices made by those they conversed with. There was also a marked improvement in the borrowing records of the students as they took books home to read. Another case of improvisation on the established curriculum was made by Sullivan who had been hearing reports from students that they were not interested in the assigned readings in class (1991). Sullivan decided to change the atmosphere by allowing students to read their choice of material and asking them to submit a personal anthology of collections of works or passages. As a result, more of the students became interested in their class session as they related what they had read to the lesson. There was also feedback from other students that their interest in reading was sparked as they made their anthologies. Yet another teacher improvised on the free reading time by choosing the reading material for her students (Braxton, B., 2006). A reading period was set for the students such that they were able to finish reading the book. After this period, creative challenges were given to the students along the lines of the adventure story that they had just read. In order to accomplish the challenge, the student needed facts gained from the reading. These activities were followed by a short five-question quiz. The tasks were not mandated and the students had the choice of attending or not, however it was observed that every day a challenge was handed out the students would be there. The teacher also checked on the borrowing records of the students and saw that most of the students, particularly those who had not been borrowing books prior the challenges, had begun borrowing books for leisure reading. Method The history of teacher research on the field of voluntary reading has laid the foundation for the methodology of answering the question on whether or not kindergarten students actually learn from such voluntary reading. The positive aspects of voluntary reading span a wide variety of lessons, reading, writing, comprehension, and vocabulary skills. What will be observed herein will be reading and comprehension skills of the students participating in the free reading period. Reading will be construed to include the inclination for voluntary reading, outside the requirements of school. Taking insight from Braxton’s ingenuity (2006), it would better suit the grade level to have students demonstrate what they have learned through play-analogous activities. The reading material will be chosen by the teacher and read aloud to the class during reading time. After the story has been read the teacher will engage the class in a discussion regarding the elements of the story, such as characters, plot, and theme, and will draw the insights made by the students. These insights will be recorded and later analyzed. The students will then proceed to the activity. The activity should be in line with the text read and would place the students in a situation similar to that faced by the character in the story. The accomplishment of the activity will be made through an action, word, or method that has been displayed in the story. The manner in which the activity is accomplished will also be recorded and later analyzed. If the students are able to answer the questions regarding the essential elements of the story then this will be regarded as a sign of basic comprehension of what has been read. When the students raise points outside the plain text of the story, such as when they relate it with their own experiences or they elaborate on the perspective of the characters, this will be taken as proof of a deeper level of comprehension. As regards the activity, the manner in which the students approach the situation and the degree to which they apply what they have just heard and learned from the story will mark the level of learning they have attained from the story. The teacher will also note through follow-up inquiries with the families of the students, or through observation in the school or classroom library borrowing system, whether or not the children have taken to reading outside of the class. All these standards are comparative in nature and so, the first observations that the teacher should make is the level of understanding of stories and the interest in reading exhibited by the students prior to a change in classroom management. Conclusion Voluntary reading has been found to be an invaluable tool in literacy and even in communication skills. As such, schools have inculcated in their curriculum varying models of a free reading period for the students. However, across the board observations have shown that such reading times are not as effective as originally hoped. Thus there is a need to analyze whether students are still learning during this period. To find out, action research is employed and the students are observed whether or not their reading and comprehension skills have improved. This is done through a procedure involving a group dialogue between the teacher and the students and an activity or challenge much like organized play. The content of the students’ contribution to the dialogue and their manner of answering the challenge will show their ability to comprehend and apply the concepts inherent in the text read. However, it is from his friend Jordan Baker that Nick learns Gatsby’s biggest secret, the reason for his beautiful parties and lavish lifestyle. Five years earlier, when Gatsby was an officer in the army and about to go to war, he met and fell in love with Nick’s cousin, Daisy Fay. Gatsby went to fight in the war and although he never stopped loving her, Daisy eventually married pompous and arrogant Tom Buchanan. When Gatsby found out that Daisy and Tom had a house on East Egg, he bought his house on West Egg so that he would be directly across the bay from her. The parties and luxuries were all used to try to impress Daisy and they were also part if his dream that he would finally win her back. Gatsby and Daisy meet when Nick invites them both over for tea at Gatsby’s request. During this time, Gatsby is just as captivated by her as he was all those years earlier. He invite s Daisy to his next party and it is there that Nick and Gatsby have a conversation about Daisy that reveals just how much he believes in his dreams. â€Å"‘I wouldn’t ask too much of her,’ I ventured. You can’t repeat the past.’ ‘Can’t repeat the past?’ He cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’ He looked around wildly, as if the past were lurking here in the shadow of his house, just out of reach of his hand. ‘I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before,’ he said nodding determinedly. ‘She’ll see.’†(116) Gatsby is convinced that he can make everything exactly as it was before Daisy married Tom and therefore, make her want to leave Tom to be with him. Unfortunately, he is sadly mistaken. At one point in the novel, Gatsby, Nick, Daisy, Tom, and Jordan Baker go to New York City together for the day, where Gatsby finally reveals his love for Daisy in front of Tom. He wants Daisy to admit that she never loved Tom, be she cannot do it because it would be a lie. Daisy did and maybe still does love Tom and Gatsby can see that nothing he says can change that. His dream of reliving the past is slowly deteriorating before his very eyes. Gatsby and Daisy do however; leave New York City to go home together with Daisy driving his car. As they are speeding away, she accidentally hits a young woman who runs out into the road. Ironically, the woman is Myrtle Wilson, with whom Tom has been having a love affair. She is killed and Gatsby decided that he will take the blame to protect Daisy. It is his final act of love toward her because the next day, Wilson finds Gatsby lounging in his pool and shoots him in the head, killing him. It was Gatsby’s naive hope for love that kept him alive, but also that killed him in the end. His dream of eternal love made him superior to others, but as Gatsby proved, even great men can be destroyed.

Othello- Emilia, Desdemona Relationship Essay Example

Othello Othello- Emilia, Desdemona Relationship Essay Othello- Emilia, Desdemona Relationship Essay Essay Topic: Othello Emilia Desdemona Relationship In the play Othello, by William Shakespeare, there are two major feminine figures that attract our attention. One is the wife of the plays tragic hero-Othello; the other is betrothed to one of the greatest villains of all time-Iago. They are part and parcel of what goes on in the play and eventually how the crisis of the play is resolved. These two females of the play can be compared and contrasted in a number of ways. To begin, both Desdemona and Emilia are the wives of men of action. Their husbands are in the Venetian military and not Just ordinary men but men who hold positions nd value. Desdemona is the wife of Othello who is a General in the army with men under his command. Emilias husband is Iago who is the ancient of Othello. Next, the two ladies exhibit a level of ignorance of the plots in play around them. Unknowingly both Desdemona and Emilia play right into lagds master plan of destruction. Desdemona and Emilia are also loyal wives who want to please their husbands. Othello believes that Desdemona is lewd and unchaste; therefore Desdemona wants to appease his worries concerning her loyalty by reassuring him, thus pleasing him. Desdemona affirms: l never did Offend you in my life; never loved Cassio But with such general warranty of heaven As I might love. I never gave him token. She is veracious in saying that she has not cheated on Othello with Cassio, therefore proving to him that she is loyal. Similarly, Emilia is Just as loyal to Iago as Desdemona is to Othello. When Emilia finds Desdemonas handkerchief she remembers that her husband had asked her to give it to him. l am glad I have found this napkin My wayward husband hath a hundred times Wooed me to steal it I nothing, but to please his fantasy. For that reason, instead of giving it back to her mistress right away, Emilia gave it to Iago with the goal in mind of pleasing him. Emilias actions thus reinforce her loyalty to Iago. Emilia and Desdemona do differ in perspective. The major contrast of the two womens attitude towards men and marriage come is highlighted when they discuss adultery. In this respect, we can see Emilia as a modern woman, a feminist before her time. Desdemona can be perceived as being old fashioned and idealistic who is votary at the shrine of love. Emilias opinion about men is expressed in the following lines: They are all but stomachs, and we all but food; They eat us hungrily, and when they are full, They belch us. Emilia and Desdemonas view on faithless wives differ as well. To Desdemona, unchaste is unthinkable. But Emilia knows there are faithless wives and she feels that she can explain why some wives fail in chastity. Emilia expresses her belief in equality. Her worldliness becomes evident as she says she may be willing to transgress the bounds of virtue, if the whole world is offered as a price. Her ultimate conclusion on such contradictory ideals is that the bad behavior of a woman is only a eflection of her husbands behavior. The difference in their use of language indicates the disparities between the womens characters. Desdemonas speech is gentle, courteous and refined. When Othello abuses her faithlessness, she is unable to argue or expostulate with him. Even in the face of death, Desdemonas language remains spiritual: No, by my life and soul! Emilia has a rough and ready tongue. She uses her language to defy the fear of death: l care not for thy sword; As Emilias anger raises her language becomes direct and coarse: He called her a whore; Emilia eels no embarrassment in pronouncing the word Whore which Desdemona shrinks from uttering. The view of both women to their husbands takes different paths at the end of the play. Desdemona continues to love her husband even though he has fatally smothered her. Desdemona acts saintly blaming her death on herself: Nobody; I myself; Farewell: She does not alter her love even in the face of irrational passion. In this way, Desdemona exemplifies romantic love. Emilia was loyal and devoted to her husband. At the shocking discovery of the truth, Emilias view of her husband is shattered. Her realisation is made worse because of the part she took in it. She is a symbol of Justice as she puts her mistresss good name before her own. Emilia is heroic in the face of death as she passes Judgment on her husband: may his pernicious soul/ Rot half a grain a day! The greatest similarity between Desdemona and Emilia is that their husbands murdered them both. Their downfall was undoubtedly their love and faith in their husbands and their trust of Iago. Both womens good qualities were used against them and led to their murder; Desdemonas generosity and compassion and Emilias sense of Justice and devotion.

Organizational Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Organizational Ethics - Essay Example Businesses that operate ethically are assumed to have a lot of gains but it is not as simple as it sounds especially in an ever increasingly competitive environment. The leader has to make sure all the stockholder’s interests are taken care of and at the same time ensure all laws are adhered to and also act according to moral principles. The problem is; does the leader do what is right according to his or her opinion or what is right according to the moral standards of society? Sometimes these two views conflict and the leader have to make this important decision. This becomes more complex as the company becomes global due to diversity of cultures. First, the paper will give the profiles of both companies and the ethical issues they faced or are currently facing. Secondly, personal reflections on the ethical actions taken by the companies will be evaluated. This will be followed by a critique of these actions taken based on philosophical theories. Foundation of Western Civilization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Foundation of Western Civilization - Essay Example The earlier Greeks could come up with a question about the nature of the world and look for an answer that was entirely independent on the supernatural powers this set the pace for the then intellectual revolution. They question the origin of the world and by so doing ignited what is now science and also ignited philosophy. The great leadership with morals in the west had foundation in the people of antique, in those early days the Hebrews introduced some ideas, their god was very powerful and could destroy whenever he wants however he was open to persuasion and subject to good morals he will however destroy those who stray from the moral standard within the society. This was borrowed to today with leaders always having to pass the moral test if they have to be elected. The Jewish religion had also impact on the west. Their God was neither superhuman nor like human beings but of high stature in comparison to human beings. They brought in righteousness into western culture, they believed that god is a righteous god and he is just and fair to forgive, if one repents the sins he will be forgiven. The prophets tell people to be righteous so that they can be saved from the punishment from God. This Jews religion and tradition brought morality to the west that is still the mode up to today. These believe in Gods power and righteousness is still part of the western culture and heritage. Qualities Of Good Leadership Management Assignment

Qualities Of Good Leadership Management Assignment With the advent of networking, collectivization and team working, leadership has become a widely discussed topic in the world at the present time. No matter in the field of politics or economy, enterprises or small business, or south or north, leadership has already been accepted as a core quality, individually and generally. This essay is expected to analyze the qualities of good leadership, aims to identify and account for the most important two qualities of good leadership, comparing different type of leaders and illustrating some successful examples. The definition of leadership in the prior research is varied. For example, some people argue that, leadership is ‘a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal’ (Northouse, cited in Grint, 2005:21), while some recognize the leadership is a kind of personal ability. Nevertheless, the term of ‘leadership’ used in this essay will be built upon on the definition given by Hogan and Kaiser (2005:172) ‘the ability to build and maintain a group that performs well compared to its competition.’ Charismatic leadership and strategic leadership are considered to be the most important two qualities of leadership in this essay. Charismatic leadership has outstanding performance in attracting followers while the strategic leadership could guard the further development of the business and the group in the right direction. It is a tough way to become a successful leader, although, theoretically, everyone has the possibility of being a leader. According to Dick Nettell, the new executive officer of Bank of Americas Consumer Call Center in Concord, California, â€Å"everybody wants to win. Everybody wants to be successful. Everybody comes to work trying to make a difference† (cited in James and Barry, 2007:4). However, the numerous people that can be labeled as ‘leaders’, but only a few of them could become a successful leader. That is because only those minority leaders have the qualities of good leadership. Therefore, it is vital to identify and analyze what kinds of qualities of good leadership are indispensable. To some extent, these qualities can be summarized in two points. Firstly, charismatic leadership is essential for a successful leader. That means a successful leader should be charismatic. On the one hand, internally, the relationship between leaders and other team members is quite influential, though it is invisible. There is a vivid saying in ancient China, the relationship between leaders and their fellows is like a metaphor, the boat and the water, and water could support the boat, also could overturn it. In the west, it is believed that, the leaders should ‘attract and inspire his followers’ (Gill, 2006: 54-55). If there is no follower, the leader could not be called a leader. On the other hand, leadership not only have to deal with the troubles from inside, but also, have to face the pressure and difficulties from outside, especially in the network society. Leaders have to built a very good networking with their partners, investors, customers, public, and sometimes, even with their counterworkers. An interesting study of senior managers in Fortune 500 companies in the US by David Waldman et al., shows that, under some conditions, ‘charismatic leadership is associated with net profit margin’ (cited in Gill, 2006:54). Thus, to some extent, charismatic leadership can bring benefit into business, even the world. In fact, it can be seen that there were many charismatic leaders in political field, such as Chairman Mao, who was the first leader of Peoples Republic of China, successfully led the revolutions in China and established the Peoples Republic of China, and Martin Luther King, who had a famous speech I have a dream in 1963, became the president of US during the American Civil Rights Act. In sort, charismatic leadership can help to establish good relationship with both inside and outside the organization, and it can benefit the world and organization itself. However, the charismatic is not the only impact in this research, there is another aspect for a good leader, that is to say, strategic leadership. Johnson and Scholes ‘define strategic leadership as encapsulating entrepreneurial processes and strategic vision’ (cited in Gill, 2006:59). That means the leader should be the core decision maker in a group, and the main conductor in carrying out the decisions. In Johnson and Scholess words, strategic leadership is ‘concerned with strategy development and change’ (cited in Gill, 2006, p: 59). Gill states that main point of strategic leadership is to decide about ‘whether and when to act’ (2006, p: 60). Significantly, strategic leadership is closely related to the personal background of the leader himself, such as the education background and the professional experience. Compare to charismatic leadership, strategic leadership gives more attentions to the practical experience, instead of personalities. Thus, strategic leadership is much easier to be developed by the leaders who would like to be successful but lack personal qualities. Furthermore, it is also worth to be pointed out that the achievement of a group, a company or a business activity could be guaranteed or lost simply by a leaders decision. For example, Kmart, Tyco and ATT were beset by ‘acquisition lust’ and were virtually destroyed because of wrong strategy they followed by (Charan and Useem, cited in Gill, 2006:19). On the other hand, the organization is highly likely to be successful if the leader has good strategic leadership. Take Marks Spencer (Gill, 2006: 197-198) for an example. Marks Spencer suffered from decline during 1990s because of poor strategic management. However, Luc Vandevelde, the chairman and CEO of MarksSpencer in 2000, made his three famous strategies, which were ‘to focus on the heart of the business’, ‘to stop all activities which were non- core or making a lo ss’, and ‘to achieve the right capital structure to make the balance sheet more efficient and to generate greater value for shareholders’, in order to cross the crisis. Resulting from these three strategies, Vandevelde ensured the success of his business for years. In a word, strategic leadership can not only bring success to leaders themselves, but also to the organizations. Although there are many others qualities of leadership, these two qualities are considered to be the most important two for being a successful leader: charismatic leadership and strategic leadership. Charismatic leadership can attract followers and get support from both inside and outside of the organization; meanwhile, Strategic leadership can guarantee the achievement of the whole business and the whole group, and benefits the organizations. If a leader lacks these two qualities of leadership, he might not achieve success in his career life.

Overcoming the perils of canoe lake Essay

There are over two thousand drug courts in America, each one specializing in its own level of drug abuse. A drug court’s primary role is to handle cases with offenders of substance abuse. They offer offenders an opportunity to enter a rehabilitation program in lieu of sentenced jail time. The road to recovery is of course challenging and difficult, making the drug courts so strict and costly. Drug courts were generally created for non-violent drug abusers. Although these offenders are given the chance to avoid jail time they are extremely supervised by the court officials. Drug tests, substance abuse treatment, must make regular appearances in court and constant checkups are required to continue in the program. These offenders’ cases are usually dismissed due to their involvement in the program or their sentence is only shortened. Participation in these programs are completely voluntary and if qualified to enter, the offender must agree to complete all the tasks given a nd report to every summoning from the court. If an offender doesn’t complete the program, they can be prosecuted or their sentence will be revised and will be placed in jail. Drug courts are considered one f the most effective ways to eliminate drug abusers and avoiding incarceration. While in the program offenders are monitored and results of every drug court case is very astonishing, but the long term effect of these cases are beyond the rulings of the court. It is not known if those who participated in the programs continued their lives drug free. These courts have been examined and tested to see if the results justify the cost of the program. The operations evaluated such as the number of participants, referrals issued, and drug court graduates. The cost savings of processing the offenders through the program instead of straight jail time, and results compared with those who have been completed their sentenced jail time as opposed to those in the programs. The therapeutic jurisprudence theory supports these courts, f ocusing on the impact that these laws create on a human’s physiological and emotional well-being.
